Lessons...
I have been teaching harmonica for almost 10 years, and the last 6 at Portland's Artichoke music. For the past 5 years, I have been teaching classes at Portland Community College.
I love many styles of music. Blues, rock, folk, old time, country, bluegrass.....I try to cater lessons to my students tastes. All lessons revolve around good technique, breathing and tone, and having a good time. I have had students that have been playing for years, but are stuck in a rut and need direction. Others are complete beginners. I teach many students twice a month, and others I see a few times a years..it really depends on the students needs.
Lessons might consist of the following: learning to play a clean single note, chordal rhythm patterns, holding the harp and posture, proper breathing and breath control, tongue blocking and tongue slaps, sound effects, articulation, listening to some of the master harp players, breaking down famous solos, soloing, playing with people, bending notes, backing up a singer, playing with other soloists, rhythm harp, campfire songs, playing in different positions, using a neck rack........ Other topics include amp and mic setup for live playing, recording studio info, repair and setup of your harp.
I have had the pleasure of taking harp lessons with Kansas City great Tulsa Reed, and St. Louis virtuoso Sandy Weltman, as well as old time master Mark Graham, eclectic harp giant Norton Buffalo, and harp technician David Flack.
Rates are negotiable. I have also used cassette tapes and the U.S. mail long distance lessons.
